SALTWATER CATFISH CAUGHT DURING
BAJA FISHING TRIP TO CAMPO RENE

Aug. 4, 2004, Doug Pierson, Laguna la Bocana, Baja California, Mexico Fishing Report:

The trip to Laguna la Bocana, Baja California, which included the sound of 2 exploding trailer tires was well worth the problems. Fishing with panguero Domingo in the Puente 1 that he had rented was simply great. A great Baja captain and a very comfortable panga. The swarms of big barracuda were a problem everywhere we fished but we still had great catches on live mackerel, cut mackerel and trolling big Rapalas. Among the catch were 5 grande sheephead, bonito, beautiful whitefish of exceptionally large size and several other species. A big Mero was hooked on a trolled blue mackerel Rapala but it came unhooked on the way in. I'd just as soon it got free anyway.

Staying at a cabin at Campo Rene there was a gringo family with an 8 year old boy who had never caught a fish. I went out on a limb and said "I'll grab a couple poles and bait and we'll fish outside the restaurant door and maybe we'll catch you a fish." It was dark. To my surprise he caught 5 catfish and a stingray and was delighted! I had not known that there were catfish there in the saltwater.
