BAHIA DE LOS ANGELES YELLOWTAIL CAUGHT IN CASA DIAZ
FISHING FROM ISLA VENTANA TO ISLA HORSEHEAD

June 19, 2004, Mark Baker, L.A. Bay fishing, Baja California, Mexico:

Our trip to Bahia de los Angeles. Me, my brother Bob Baker from carlsbad and my girlfriend Nicole Venegas from Anza, Calif., took a drive down to Bahia de los Angeles to chase the yellows around in hopes of bagging a few for the ice box.

We left Hemet and went to Carlsbad to pick up Bob, and then went to pacific Coast Bait and Tackle to pick up a few last items.

When we arrived in Bahia de los Angeles, we went to Casa Diaz to get a room from Chubasco the host. We stayed at Casa Diaz for 28 bucks a night, a very good deal. They also have a satellite phone now to call ahead of time for reservations, 011-52-200-124-9112.

We reserved our boat the El Dorado 2, with Capt. Pepe.

We fished the next morning and told Pepe we wanted yellowtail. We made bait about a hundred yards off the beach with some Lucky Joe bait rigs really quick, then headed for Isla Smith.

We didn’t find much there, so we headed to the back side of Isla Ventana where we found numerous boils of yellowtail in the 10 to 20-pound range. We then cast iron on them and also yo-yoed iron on the bottom. We used green and yellow, blue and chrome, and blue-green chrome mackerel pattern colors.

We bagged a few, then switched to live bait. We fly-lined some live bait and set up a dropper loop for live bait on the bottom. We caught more yellows like that.

Whe yellows were everywhere from Isla Ventana to Isla Horsehead, on the bottom and on the top, and everywhere in between. Very good fishing right now.

We caught our limits the first day out, and we caught our limits the second day out. The best part about it was there were not many squid in the area. We only got three squid in two days fishing.

Plus, if the bite for the yellowtail slows down a bit there’s a lot of bass, cabrilla, and Mexican lings on the bottom to catch.
