BAJA FISHING TRIP WITH THE MANUEL
CORTEZ FAMILY AT BAHIA DE LOS ANGELES

May 13, 2005, Paul Robotta, Bahia de los Angeles, Baja California, Mexico:

With family and friends, I traveled to Bahia de los Angeles the weekend of May 7, 2005.

Stayed at the Old Mill in San Quintin on Baja's west coast on Wednesday night. The rooms were great and the facilities looked very kept up.

We traveled to Bahia de los Angeles on Thursday May 5, 2005. The road into Bahia de los Angeles is in absolutely perfect condition. The conditions were generally cool and windy.

We hoped the wind would calm, but were unable to fish on Friday May 6, 2005. Some Bahia de los Angeles (L.A. Bay) fishing boats made it out for a mixed bag of bottom fish.

Instead, we traveled by dirt road south to Las Animas Bay for a day of relaxation. There was no wind and the water was about 66 degrees.

We asked a local panguero to take one adult and the 5 kids out fishing for an hour or so and they ended up with about 20 red snapper and 2 small yellowtail. The snappers were about 2 or 3 pounds and the yellows were about 5 pounds.

We were able to fish out of Bahia de los Angeles on Saturday May 7. Although we saw breezing yellowtail at 10 to 15 pounds, they were not biting. We ended up with 6 small yellowtail at about 5 pounds.

The fishing water out of Bahia de los Angeles was very cool and estimated to be in the low 60 degrees. Bottom fish were very plentiful as we caught lingcod, cabeson, spotted bay bass, etc. I estimated yellows moving into this area about Memorial Day. All conditions look good.

On another note, the new Bahia de los Angeles gas station opened up on Friday, May 6, 2005, and I think we were the very first customers. The gas station is great and the same gentleman owns the Costa Del Sol Hotel and restaurant.

We fished with Manuel Cortez and his family. We generally fished south of Bahia de los Angeles about 10 miles.
