CAMPING AT PUNTA LA GRINGA AND FISHING THE
BAY'S INNER ISLANDS HORSEHEAD AND PIOJO

July 8, 2005, Tyler Thorsen, Bahia de los Angeles, Baja California Sur, Mexico fishing:

We did have a great time fishing at Bahia de los Angeles (L.A. Bay), fishing June 21st through the 27th.

The fishing for yellowtails 5 to 15 pounds was best at the area between Horsehead and Piojo under the birds. Most of the folks were able to get a few fish including our group up to 14 pounds on Salas jigs. We also got into a few large squid which was fun.

The full moon made camping at Punta la Gringa quite interesting, cutting off the road at the point for hours as the tide was in. The heat, which I am pretty used to living in South Texas, with heat indexes of 110 degrees, hit on Saturday the 25th with temps at 111 degrees in the shade in our camp by 9:30 a.m. It was very hot in town and reminded me of standing in front of an oven door with a fan blowing hot air through it!

The big yellowtails were landed on bait on the north end of Isla Smith. We saw at least ten from 30 to 40 pounds landed on the 26th and 27th all on live bait fished on the bottom from 90 to 200 feet.

The spotted bay bass and other bottom fish were very small though we did keep a few that were over 2 pounds. We saw a couple of whales near Isla Smith and enjoyed our time there very much.

Given the length of time camping, heat, and the shore fishing versus the boat fishing, we plan to go to Punta Maria on the Pacific side next year. We can camp longer there with the more temperate conditions and the shore fishing is much better than at L.A. Bay. I would like to try L.A. Bay when the yellowtail are migrating back south. I guess that is in late September as it might be cooler then.
