BAJA FISHING TRIP TO DAGGETT'S CAMP

June 2, 2006, Chris Pennington, Daggett's Camp, Bahia de Los Angeles, Baja California, Mexico:

I just returned from Bahia De Los Angeles and found some great fishing.

My wife Jean and I fished with Ruben Daggett on Monday, May 29th. We launched in town at Guillermo's at 6:15 a.m. and made bait only about 100 yards off the ramp. There was lots of bait in the bay, mostly small to medium mackerel so it only took about 10 to 15 minutes to fill up the tank.

We ran about 30 miles north of Bahia de los Angeles to Punta Remedios on the Baja coast and stopped to fish at an area called "Los Candeleros," or "the candle sticks," not too far past Punta Remedios.

The yellowtail were everywhere! Down deep at 200 feet and also on the surface chasing bait. We mostly caught 10 to 12-pound size yellowtail, using blue and white iron, but after only 45 minutes we were close to our limit.

We decided to switch to bait to give our arms a break, but the entire area is swarming with squid right now. When we managed to get our baits down we were still hooking up with yellows and my wife also pulled in a 4 foot sand shark.

The yellowtail are spread out over a huge area right now, but we didn't see any tight concentrations on the surface. We fished about 300 yards off the shore in 62 degree water.

Back by Guillermo's at Bahia de Los Angeles, the water temperature was up to 66 degrees. When we cleaned the fish we found only sardines in their stomachs so maybe that's why they're up at Remedios and not in the inner bay.

At Bahia de Los Angeles, the "La Gringa" area has been sold and is now fenced off. Also they are widening the main street in town considerably. Ruben Daggett attended the ejido meeting on Sunday the 31st but all he said was that a lot of rumors are flying around town as far as development of Bahia is concerned.

There is still only one gas station operating at Bahia de los Angeles (L.A. Bay). The weather was mid to high 80's daytime and cool at night. We also had the usual 2 days of ferocious winds but thankfully our fishing day was perfect.
