STRIPED MARLIN THE MAIN CATCH FOR SOLMAR
FLEET BOATS FISHING AT CABO SAN LUCAS

May 20-26, 2004, by Benjamin Ortega of Solmar Fleet, Cabo San Lucas fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

If it's stripers you want, stripers you get, striped marlin, that is. At least that's been the main piscatorial menu the past three weeks in waters off Cabo San Lucas. On the other hand, tuna and the majority of the Cabo San Lucas's productive small game fishery seem to have gone into hiding.

Larry Atkins, of Tucson, AZ, topped the weekly catch by bringing in three striped marlin. He fished Cabo San Lucas’ Solmar II. Another highliner was Florida angler Gregory Spanara, who tackled two stripers while fishing from the Solmar I.

Jeff Williams of New York City also made the weekly double record, taking his Cabo San Lucas stripers while fishing aboard the San Lucas V. Single striper zappers included John Poltere of San Petersburg, FL, Kerry Klipp of Boston, MS, Anthony Starkey of San Diego, CA, and John Smith of Los Angeles, CA. All but Poltere caught their marlin at the Jaime Bank. Poltere took his striper at Cabo San Lucas’ Faro Viejo Bank.

Captain of the Week honors went to Antonio Romero of the Solmar II for taking eight striped marlin, five yellowfin tuna, and two dorado.

Total catch for the week in 66 outings included 21 striped marlin, 15 released, 6 yellowfin tuna, 6 dorado, two wahoo, 13 skipjack and 13 sierra.
