MARLIN ON A HOLIDAY AS CABO BOATS
TARGET SMALLER GAME FISH SPECIES

March 17-23, 2005, Benjamin Ortega, Solmar Fleet, Cabo San Lucas fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico Report:

With marlin apparently on somewhat of holiday mood during the past two weeks, small game fish continue to dominate the catch in Cabo San Lucas fishing vacation area waters.

One of those few exceptions was the catch of a single marlin and four yellowfin tuna by Dan Silva of Grosham, OR, while fishing the Jaime Bank aboard the Cabo San Lucas charter fishing boat Solmar VI. He released the marlin.

Live mackerel has been the best enticement for both marlin and big dorado at Cabo, Solmar boat skippers noted.

The top yellowfin catch for this past week was that posted by Mike Oswald of Boseman, MT, who caught 11 of the tuna, all taken while fishing at the Faro Viejo Bank near Cabo San Lucas on the San Lucas VI.

Amarillo, TX angler Jack Miller had great success fishing 12 miles off San Jose del Cabo, where he caught seven yellowfin and six dorado, all on live mackerel, from the Cabo San Lucas boat Solmar IV.

Distaffers Mary, Rose and Phoebe Hambrigh of Beaumont, TX, fishing from the Solmar III, found similar success with those mackerel baits at the Faro, where they caught four yellowfin and five dorado. "It was our first time deep-sea fishing," Phoebe joyously recalled about their outing. "It was a blast. Fabulous."

The Jaime Bank, which has been the most productive location the past week or so, rewarded Tom Hykins with six yellowfin and one dorado. The Wyoming resident fished the Solmar IV, while noting its Cabo San Lucas sportfishing crew "were extra good fishermen."

Brian and Susan Carlin of Los Angeles, CA, fished at the Jaime for six yellowfin and one yellowtail, while fishing the Solmar 0.

Dan Silva of Lake Havasu City, AZ, fished the same bank aboard the San Lucas VI in scratching out a pair of yellowtail.

Our Cabo San Lucas sportfishing captain of the week was Antonio Romero, skipper of the El Torito, whose passengers took eight yellowfin tuna, four striped marlin and nine dorado.

The total catch by the Solmar charter fishing fleet for the week including, releases, was 18 striped marlin, 76 yellowfin tuna, 56 dorado, four wahoo, 17 sierra and 27 giant squid.
