MARLIN FISHING IS ACTIVE IN WARMING WATER AND WINDY WEATHER

June 8-15, 2005, Benjamin Ortega, Solmar Fleet, Cabo San Lucas sportfishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

A return of warm water to Cabo San Lucas fishing vacation waters late last week brought with it one of the best marlin bites of the season despite high winds and roily seas.

Highlighting the angling action was the catch and release of four striped marlin and a big blue marlin taken by Daniel and Nigel Parham of Chatham Kent, England. They fished aboard the Cabo San Lucas charter fishing boat El Torito off the East Cape corner. The four stripers were taken on live bait and the blue on a silver-and-black jig. Ecstatic over their good fortune, the Parhams noted that it was their "best fishing day ever."

Another pair who got in on the striper bite, also off the East Cape corner, were John and Chris Gamrot of Eduvurgly, Scotland, who fished the Solmar IV in taking and releasing three stripers - all on live mackerel.

Another of this group of Old World anglers who wracked up a multiple marlin catch was Charlie Dennis of England. He caught and released a pair of stripers taken on live mackerel while fishing the Solmar I at the Jaime Bank.

Single striper catches were recorded by Brian Scott of Houston, TX, and Richard Johnson of Belfast, Ireland. Both anglers released their fish.

Scott took his fish from the El Torito at the Jaime Bank on a live mullet. Johnson bagged his striper on a live mackerel fished from the Cabo San Lucas boat Solmar IX off the East Cape corner.

Small yellowfin tuna also went on somewhat of a suicide bite off Punta Palmilla. It was there that Raul Gonzales of Colusa, CA, took 22 of the tuna, plus two giant squid, from the Solmar VII.

Ventura, California, anglers Dave Mullins and Tim McCauley experienced similar action off Punta Palmilla in splitting a catch of 20 small yellowfin and a single giant squid, taken on a combination of lures and live mackerel in fishing the Solmar.
