STRIPED MARLIN BEING CAUGHT IN WARM
WATER GOING UP THE EAST CAPE SIDE

June 16-22, 2005, Benjamin Ortega, Solmar Fleet, Cabo San Lucas sportfishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

An area of warm Cabo San Lucas fishing water, extending eastward from Punta Gorda continues to provide excellent top-water fishing for striped marlin on the outside and roosterfish along the East Cape shoreline.

Doubles were prevalent in the marlin take in the Cabo San Lucas vacation area.

Elsewhere, however, the bite is slow, save for lots of yellowfin tuna, what with water temperatures being on the cool side due to strong westerly winds.

Virtually all Cabo San Lucas marlin are being taken on live mackerel, as was the case with Jeff Mays and Lauren Taylor of Austin, TX. They fished the Solmar I off Destiladeras, where they hooked and released a pair of stripers.

Jeff and Dave Kenrrick of Liverpool, England - part of a large contingent of British anglers fishing Baja's Cape this early summer - fished this same area aboard the El Torito to take a pair of stripers.

Also bagging a pair of these scrappy billfish was Andrew Bacigalupi of San Bruno, CA, who caught his fish at the Gordo Banks while fishing from the San Lucas VI.

David Longwell of Palo Alto, CA, and Tom Herbage of Beaverton, OR, wrapped up this week's marlin count, each accounting for single marlin. Both anglers fished off Punta Gorda.

Herbage added a dorado to his bag for the day while fishing from the Cabo San Lucas charter sportfishing boat Solmar. Longwell fished the Solmar I.

The tuna bite was centered off Faro Viejo. It was there that Christian Allen and Cody Sanchez of Santa Maria, CA, fishing the Solmar III, and Harry Garabedian of Clovis, N.M., aboard the San Lucas IV, caught a total of eight yellowfin tuna.

The Allen-Sanchez team took six of those tuna, along with five jacks.

Captain of the week honors went to Federico Marron of the Solmar I, who in six Cabo San Lucas sportfishing trips rewarded his passengers with 13 striped marlin, 34 yellowfin, three jacks and one wahoo.

Total catch for the week by the Solmar fleet in 69 outings from Cabo San Lucas, including releases, was 44 striped marlin, 123 tuna, 16 jacks, 11 sierra and three wahoo.
