AUGUST FISHING PRODUCES GOOD MIXED BILLFISH ACTION AT LOS CABOS

Aug. 12-18, 2005, Tracy Ehrenberg, Pisces Fleet, Los Cabos, Baja California Sur fishing, Mexico:

Here in Cabo San Lucas, we have started to see August fishing, as it should be, a mixture of striped marlin, blue marlin and sailfish.

This week of fishing at Los Cabos we saw some good catches, but there were also quite a few boats "skunked" as the fish were spread out in different locations.

It was nice to see so many blue marlin with a total of eleven for us this week. It was also nice to see that more and more anglers are releasing even this large fish. Just a few years back any blue was a dead blue, as they are considered such as trophy.

"Andrea" was on a roll this week, with a striped and blue on the 13th for Johnny Cannon & Jennifer Meazon from Springtown, Texas, a blue and a striped for Glen Mulekas on the 14th, and three striped marlin for Gordon Clunn, from Cypress, Texas on the 15th.

"Adriana" was fortunate to release two blues on the 16th for Will Childress and Butch Barger from Galveston, Texas. Texans sure do seem to be lucky fisherman.

This same day "Tracy Ann" had both a striped and a blue marlin release for Gwen & Mike Dounarsky from Millville, New Jersey.

The best catch though, had to be aboard "Rebecca" for Pete and Christine Zarcone from New York. They caught a 390 pound blue marlin, a striped marlin, a sailfish, and 35 pound dorado on August 13th off of San Jose.

"Sundancer" had a 330 lb blue one day before at the Cabrillo Sea Mount.

For those anglers at Cabo San Lucas that caught fish, it was great, but 25 percent of charters this week drew a blank, which is disappointing, especially for first-timers who think you catch something every time you go out.

Fifty-four percent of Pisces Fleet Cabo San Lucas charter fishing boats caught some type of billfish consisting of 41 striped marlin, 11 blues and 5 sails for a total 57 billfish, of which 53 were released. The weight on the blues was from 150 to 400 pounds. The striped marlin are getting big with several fish up to 200 pounds, and the sailfish were from 70 to 110 pounds. Live bait worked best for the stripes, lures for the blues and a combination of both for the sails

It was nice to see a healthy increase on Cabo San Lucas dorado catches this week up to 34 percent. Fish ranged from 15 to 60 pounds and catches varied from the most common single fish, to eight. All were found whilst looking for marlin, and a couple of larger schools off of Pedregal produced catches of nearby blue marlin feeding on them.

Cabo San Lucas tuna catches dropped this week to a measly 10 percent, with fish mostly of football size, thought there was one 70 pounder. Wahoo catches were on the slow side, with just a few fish in the 40 to 50 pound class. Inshore pangas caught some roosters, dorado and skipjacks.

Seas were mostly calm, skies clear, and weather hot at Cabo San Lucas.

The best Cabo San Lucas fishing locations were Cabo Real, San Jose, Redhill, Punta Gorda, Jaime Bank, off of the Old Lighthouse, 95 spot, Chileno, and off of Cabeza de Ballena. Cabo San Lucas fishing water temperatures averaged 84-88 degrees.
