GOOD SUMMER MIXED BILLFISH ACTION
FOR CABO SAN LUCAS WATERS

Aug. 25-31, 2005, Benjamin Ortega, Solmar Fleet, Cabo San Lucas fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

Billfish of all shapes and sizes continue to provide some of the best fishing in years in Solmar Fleet waters.

Richmond, Virginia, buddies, Mark Barnett and Derek Goldberg, put on a friendly but fiercely fought day of competition while fishing in separate boats. Goldberg, fishing aboard the Cabo San Lucas charter boat Solmar IV, caught and released three stripers, two dorado and three yellowfin tuna on a combination of live bait and lures at the Golden Gate Bank. Barnett fished off Pozo Cota where he caught an 81-pound sailfish and released a blue marlin on live bait. He chartered the San Lucas IV.

Toronto, Canada, angler Sam Kanes, fished the San Lucas VI off Punta Palmilla. He caught and released a 130-pound class striped marlin, a 250- to 280-pound blue marlin and finished the day with a 121-pound broadbill swordfish. The broadbill was taken on live bait; the blue and striper on a green lure.

Edward Maranian of Los Angeles, Calif., scored a hat trick, taking a 180-pound blue and a pair of stripers, which he released. He fished Solmar I off the Golden Gate Bank.

Punta Gorda also provided some topnotch Cabo San Lucas fishing area catches during the week, as seen in one made by Chris Boin of San Antonio, TX aboard the new Bertram SM VI. It included a 51-pound wahoo and two released sailfish.

A released sailfish provided "an awesome experience" for Travis Henry of Fremont, CA. The sail went for a yellow and pink lure off Chileno Beach.

Christian Campbell of Glendora, Calif., fished the El Torito to take a 156-pound striper on live mackerel off Cabo Falso.

Top captain for the week was Adalberto Agundez, skipper of the San Lucas VI, whose customers in seven Cabo San Lucas sportfishing outings caught nine striped marlin, one black marlin, three blue marlin, 36 yellowfin tuna, seven dorado and one swordfish.

Total catch by the Solmar fishing fleet at Cabo San Lucas, including releases, was 36 striped marlin, 20 blue marlin, 10 sailfish, eight black marlin, one swordfish, 41 yellowfin tuna, and one wahoo.
