GOOD WINTER MARLIN FISHING HOLDS UP ON
BAJA PACIFIC BANKS FOR PISCES FLEET BOATS

Jan. 5-11, 2007, Pisces Fleet, Tracy Ehrenberg, Los Cabos, Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

Pisces Fleet boats had another superb fishing week here in Cabo San Lucas, though we were a little surprised at the variety of fish being caught.

Pisces Fleet fish catches were very good this week, and in fact we had an almost perfect catch record. Just one Pisces boat did not catch fish, giving us an overall success rate for all species combined of 99 percent.

In these Mexican sportfishing waters, we usually we expect to catch pretty much just striped marlin in the month of January, but we are now also seeing quite a few sailfish, a lot of dorado, and even Humboldt giant squid who generally make their appearance in March.

Cabo striped marlin catches remain consistent with 88 percent of boats catching between 1 and 6 marlin per day, with 3 fish being the average. The Golden Gate Bank is still holding marlin. There must be a lot for them at this bank.

Notable catches during the week were 6 marlin aboard the "Tracy Ann' on January 11th for Judy and Michael Tormey from Greeley, Colorado; 6 marlin for "Rebecca" the day before for Michael and Cindy Hulquist from Alaska; and 6 marlin also for our boat "Andrea" plus 3 dorado for Keon Dagler from Sherwood, Oregon, and Aaron Gore from Hillsburo, Oregon.

Some of our fishing boats also did well, such as "El Gallo" with a half-dozen fish for Ron Clapper from Montoursville, Pennsylvania. The boat "Josephine" is usually considered more of a luxury yacht for cruising, but this week she strutted her stuff, catching and releasing 3 striped marlin and a sailfish, plus four dorado on January 7th.

This fishing week at Los Cabos, Pisces anglers caught a total of 127 striped marlin and four sailfish, and all were released.

Yellowfin tuna catches were very slow at the south tip of Baja this week. We did also release one small hammerhead shark and one mako shark at the Golden Gate. There were several large Humboldt squid caught up to 30 pounds, as well as one small wahoo.

There were lots of dorado caught at Cabo San Lucas this week, with most dorado found mixed in with the marlin at the Golden Gate Bank. Pisces anglers caught 74 dorado averaging 15 to 30 pounds. Dorado catches ranged from one to eight fish.

Our top dorado boat was the "C Rod" on Jan. 11th, and they also released 3 striped marlin this day.

Cabo weather was partly cloudy, with cool evenings, seas calm. The average water temperature was 72 degrees.

Inshore fishing boats caught sierra and a few roosterfish around Cabo.
