EAST CAPE FISHING IS ON AN UPWARD TREND
WITH LOTS OF SCHOOLIE DORADO BEING CAUGHT

June 5, 2004, Bill Burkett, East Cape, Baja California Sur, Mexico sportfishing results:

Fishing seemed to pick up last week, with the exception of Thursday, when strong SE winds and rough seas slowed the action considerably. More and more Dorado are showing up in the catch, which is making everyone happy. They're smaller "schoolie" Dorado at the shark bouys off Pescadero and 20 - 50 lbrs. in singles and doubles offshore. An independent charter boat, the Oso Negro, caught a 250 lb. Yellowfin on Friday (they reported the size on the radio, but it was weighed at Rancho Buena Vista, if you want to confirm the actual weight). Also, "Relentless" out of Palmas de Cortez, caught a 300+ lb. Blue Marlin this week.

I personally made two trips this week. Day one was spent close in at Pescadero (3-7 miles) and yielded a Striper (120 lbs), two small Dorado and a surprising Toro we caught from a huge school we found 5 miles offshore (we usually only find them near the beach).

On the second trip we went 30 miles out and found a dead Sea Lion. We, and three other boats, managed to catch a little of everything from under it, including Tuna, Dorado, Marlin and Wahoo.

Water temps. have been running between 78 and 80 degrees in most the areas. The cold water finger that had been coming up along the shoreline from the Gordo Banks moved out toward the middle of the gulf for a few days, but now shows signs of returning toward shore (from Terrafin).

The weather is HOT and Humid for early June. Seems more like August.

Went fishing again today (Saturday). In my boat. It's a 22 foot Glacier Bay Catamaran - named - Fat Cat. Caught a Striped Marlin. Short day too. Didn't decide to go until 9AM.

EAST CAPE, Mexico: May 29, 2004, Bill Burkett, East Cape fishing report: I went fishing today (Sat.) but had only one marlin looker. He refused bait and apparently didn't like the colors of the lures we were pulling. I heard on the radio that one local gringo caught a blue marlin on Friday near punta Pescadero. The angler estimated the marlin at about 200 lbs. That's the East Cape season's first blue for the gringos as far as I know.

There are marlin (stripers) all around East Cape, but not in the concentrations they were in a few weeks back. You have to look for them more now.

Tuna are hanging with porpoise about 15 miles east of the lighthouse (punta arenas). They’re mostly 15-20 lbrs. with a few larger fish mixed in.
