KAYAK FISHING AT PUNTA COLORADA MEXICO
YIELDS ROOSTERFISH CLOSE TO THE 60-POUND CLASS

July 24, 2004, Jim Sammons, La Jolla Kayak Fishing, East Cape, Baja, Mexico Kayak Fishing:

Just back from a week at Punta Colorada with several kayak fishing clients. When the wind was not blowing the kayak fishing was great. All the Dorado you could want and with the right bait, mullet, big roosters at the lighthouse. George Pflaum of San Diego had the big fish of the trip a Rooster topping 55 pounds closer to 60. We also had several more roosterfish in the forty five pound class Ken Kopp of Los Angeles catching a Rooster close to fifty. On the last day of the trip we also caught several Jack Crevalle over twenty pounds just before getting hit buy a chubasco that sent us running for the beach.

We had sixteen kayaks, two groups of eight. Three days for each group.

Dorado all over, less than a mile from shore. Between the hotel and the lighthouse. Just paddle to the blue water. Skipjack strips worked the best as well as live macs and one on the fly. Most of the Roosters were on mullet.
