We've just enjoyed another stellar week of fishing down here on the East Cape. We hit a bit of a slow stretch on Sat. & Sun. due to weather, but anglers made a nice rebound. Although there weren't as many hooks in the water as we've had recently, the fish are obviously still here at East Cape. The Yellowfin Tuna bite continues to happen with some real nice fish continuing to be landed. While not as wide open, the Dorado bite remained quite fun with anglers landing some pretty decent specimens. The Billfish bite continued to slow down a bit which is quite typical for this time of year. There are still some nice Wahoo being landed as well. This past week saw yet another Jerry "Fish With Me" Hall Group invade the East Cape. Although the fishing slowed down a bit over the weekend, Jerry's 36 anglers ended up catching 164 fish so it wasn't all too bad. Nice going Jerry and friends!

Environment-wise, East Cape fishing saw some pretty stormy weather beginning on Friday and continuing through Monday which slowed things up just a bit. Actually, Friday was real good fishing but the bite fell off a bit on Sat. & Sun, only to pick back up for the rest of the reporting week. Things definitely cooled off with the rains as the air temps saw a range of 65-89. No info regarding the water temp is available as Terrafin's website is currently down. We'll update that info as it becomes available. The moon spent the past week waxing towards full, but it didn't seem to affect the fishing much. Bait-wise, we've got mackerel and sardines for the fish to snack on.

As mentioned above, the East Cape billfish bite is all but impressive at present, although nothing unexpected. The overall combined catch rate for billfish was about 11%. The Sailfish bite continues to lead the billfish pack with anglers reporting numerous landings to the south between the waters of Rancho Leonero (22 miles), Punta Colorada (4-6 miles), Punta Arena (12-15 miles), and Destiladeras (5-7 miles). Some Sailfish action was also reported straight off Los Barriles (27-30 miles). The Striped Marlin bite was next with anglers reporting limited action to the north off Punta Pescadero (10-12 miles), straight off Los Barriles (28-30 miles), as well as to the south off Punta Arena (12-15 miles). A couple of Blue Marlin were reportedly landed straight off Los Barriles (30 miles), as well as to the south off Punta Arena (10 miles). Mackerel and various lures did the trick re: billfish.

The East Cape Dorado bite is still going strong with anglers reporting much fun. Further, anglers are landing some pretty nice fish in the 35-40 lb class. The overall catch rate for Dodo is about 48%, so that sure doesn't suck. Anglers are reporting action mostly to the south between the waters of Punta Arena (1/4-1/2 mile), Los Cerritos (2-3 miles), Las Barracas (10-12 miles), Cabo Pulmo (1/4-5 miles), and Bajo San Luis (2-3 miles). Mackerel, sardines, and hoochies reportedly worked wonders catching Dorado.

There's still plenty of Yellowfin Tuna swimming the waters of the East Cape. Most are in the football class but quite a few are coming in in the toad range between 50-60 lbs. Anglers reported success mostly to the south off La ribera (4-7 miles), Cabo Pulmo (10-15 miles), and Bajo San Luis (2-5 miles). Once again, mackerel, sardines, hoochies and cedar plugs were once again the drugs of choice among the pelagic species known as Yellowfinus Tunacomidas.

Several Wahoo were landed this past week and East Cape anglers reported action to the south between Cabo Pulmo (5-8 miles), and Destiladeras (3-7 miles). Rapalas did the trick there. Rounding out the report were 8 Pargo landed inshore off La Ribera, 4 White Bonita, landed off La Ribera as well (2 miles), and 2 Sierra, landed off Bajo San Luis (1 mile). Sardines did the trick for all species rounding out the report.

Oct. 8-21, 2004, Chris Moyers, East Cape Smoke House, East Cape Fishing Report:

The East Cape Classic anglers rolled into town on Oct. 13th. Hosted by the always lovely, Lynn Rose, this year's tourney was the best ever! Over 200 anglers participated and the East Cape fishing was phenomenal for these anglers. Better still, Lynn and the participating anglers and sponsors were able to raise over $23,000 for the local school district! That's U.S. dollars amigos, not pesos.

As for the fishing, the East Cape Classic anglers released a total of 138 billfish over the three-day tourney! Felicidades to Daryl Wheeteling who landed the biggest Tuna at 88 lbs., and to Ken Gilliam who landed the biggest Dorado at 47 lbs. Both of these amigos were fishing aboard the Miss Petunia. Not surprisingly, Daryl and Ken, along with teammate, Rich Palys, earned top team honors. For more info on the final stats as well as info on how to get involved next year, visit www.lynnrosetours.com.

East Cape fishing is still going off pretty good. The Yellowfin Tuna bite continues to go OFF while the Dorado bite just keeps on keeping on! In terms of billfish, the Sailfish bite continues to impress, with the Striped Marlin bite bringing up the rear. The Blue Marlin bite is pretty slow as most of the bigger fish cruised south for the Black & Blue. Environment-wise, we have had next to perfect East Cape fishing weather with very little wind to speak of. We have had some rainy weather in the past few days but that's not covered by this report. Air temps have ranged between 67-93. East Cape water temperatures, according to our amigos at Terrafin, saw a range of 82-88. Bait-wise, we've got sardines and mackerel for the fish to snack on. All in all amigos, it's a truly fine time to find your backside in southern Baja.

Beginning with billfish, anglers are reporting some fun catching Sailfish mostly. Some action occurred to the north between the waters of Punta Pescadero (22-25 miles and in the vicinity of the shark buoy stops), and El Cardonal (22-25 miles). Most action was enjoyed to the north between La Ribera (6-20 miles), Punta Colorada (2-5 miles), Punta Arena (36-38 miles), Las Barracas (7-9 miles), Cabo Pulmo (12-27 miles), and Los Frailes (3-5 miles). As for Striped Marlin, limited action was had to the north off Punta Pescadero in the vicinity of the shark buoy stops, and El Cardonal (20-23 miles). Some action also occurred straight off Los Barriles as well (25-33 miles. Most Striper action occurred to the south however, between the waters of La Ribera (10-13 miles), Punta Arena (10-13 miles), Cabo Pulmo (12-14 miles), and El Faro (6-9 miles). As for the Blues, limited action was reported to the north off Punta Pescadero (12-22 miles), El Cardonal, as well as in the vicinity of the 88. To the south, some fun was had off La Ribera (35 miles) and Los Cerritos (12 miles). Mackerel and various lures did the trick re: billfish.

As mentioned the East Cape Dorado bite is pretty happening over the last couple of weeks. There are some real nice fish coming in. Most are in the 30 lb. class with some nice 40-50 pounders mixed in. For the most part, the Dodos are close in which is real nice. Anglers are reporting success mostly to the south between the waters of Rancho Leonero (1/4-1/2 mile), Surjidero (3-4 miles), La Ribera (1/4-3 miles), Punta Arena (1/4-1/2 mile), Los Cerritos (5-7 miles), Las Tachuelas (1/4-1/2 mile), Cabo Pulmo (4-6 miles), and Destiladeras (3-5 miles). Some East Cape fishing action also was had to the north at the shark buoy stops off Punta Pescadero and straight off Los Barriles (33-36 miles). Sardines, mackerel, and hoochies reportedly did the trick there.

The Yellowfin bite continues to sizzle amigos! What a great Tuna fishing season East Cape is having. We just about topped 1,800 for the 2-week period which ain't too bad! Most fish are in the 10-20 lb. class but there were plenty of nice toads mixed in, including a 200 + lb. behemoth! Anglers reported a lot of fun to the south between the waters of La Ribera (6-13 and 25-30 miles), Punta Arena (5-13 miles), Cabo Pulmo (2-8 and 15-19 miles), Los Frailes (6-10 miles), and Destiladeras (2-6 miles). Success was also reported to the north off Punta Pescadero (27-30 miles), as well as straight off Los Barriles (25-48 miles). As always, mackerel, sardines, hoochies and cedar plugs were once again the drugs of choice among the pelagic species known as Yellowfinus Tunacomidas.

Quite a few East Cape Wahoo were also landed over the past 2 weeks. Most action occurred to the south between the waters of Cabo Pulmo (5-10 miles), Los Frailes (8-12 miles), and Destiladeras (4-8 miles). Rapalas did the trick there.

Rounding out the East Cape fishing report were 133 Pargo. Anglers reported Pargo fun close in off Rancho Leonero and La Ribera. Also caught were 61 White Bonita off Cabo Pulmo (8-10 miles), and Los Frailes (5-8 miles). Finally, we saw 1 each for Yellowtail (Rancho Leonero), and Sierra.
