EAST CAPE FISHING OUT OF VERDUGO'S WITH
CAPT. JESUS ON THE CRUISER DEBORAH LEE

Dec. 5, 2004, Curt Collier, East Cape fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

My buddy Steve Button from San Jose and I were at Martin Verdugo's Beach Resort from Friday Nov. 26th to Wed Dec 1st.

On Saturday, we fished the East Cape shark buoys north of Punta Pescadero with Captain Jesus on the cruiser "Deborah Lee" in 76 degree water with a light wind and some swell. Including released fish, we caught 8 East Cape dorado with Steve picking up a 28-pound bull. It took me an hour and twenty minutes to get in a 50-pound bull on 30-pound Trilene Big Game with my Calstar rod and Daiwa Sealine reel. I was weak in the knees from too much fun at Verdugo's bar from the night before and almost lost my cookies an hour into the fight. Yikes! An RV'er at Verdugo's had a recently calibrated scale and we have a photo of the 50-pound mark and the big bull.

On Sunday, we hit the East Cape shark buoys again, with Jesus and the cruiser. Including released fish, we caught 7 dorado with Steve hitting a nice 34-pound bull. About 1:00 we decided to troll back towards Verdugo's for marlin and 2 minutes after the lures hit the water we had a double hook up. Mine threw the hooks on a jump, but Steve landed a 160-pound class striper on a boat rod.

We had planned on taking Monday off and fishing Tuesday, but the north wind kicked up. We walked out on the beach at 1 a.m. Monday night and waves were crashing over the Playa del Sol dock. At 5:30 a.m. the waves flipped the dock upside down and it started heading out to sea. The locals chained three loaders in tandem and were able to salvage most of it. Needless to say, we were blown out by the weather so we hung out with local friends, Jack and Carolyn, until they took us to the airport Wednesday afternoon.

All in all, another terrific trip to East Cape.
