LOTS OF SMALLER DORADO CAUGHT BY EAST CAPE FLY FISHING ANGLERS

Dec. 31, 2004, Tim Selzer, Baja On The Fly, East Cape, Baja California Sur, Mexico Fly Fishing Report:

The calendar may read “winter,” but fly fishing has been good at East Cape with lots of small dorado (mahi-mahi) north of town. East Cape charter fishing pangas and cruisers are trolling to locate small schools of up to 20 fish, and then casting white and blue flies to catch followers. Sierra fishing by Punta Arena is excellent on sparsely tied white and green sardina flies. Sardina for bait is available at Cabo Pulmo. Some small roosterfish have been spotted at the lighthouse; I landed one yesterday evening. Marlin fishing has been good here at East Cape and excellent at Cabo. The East Cape surface sea water temperature has been in the low 70s. North winds started today following Wednesday's low pressure system. Billfish provided surprisingly good action offshore fishing action early this week. Inshore, there are still enough dorado to make things interesting. Sierra and small roosterfish are on the beaches, not bad for late December East Cape fishing.

East Cape water temperature 70-74. Air temperature 66-71. Conditions: Scattered Clouds.
