MAHI-MAHI FISHING CONTINUES HOT FOR EAST CAPE BOATS
WORKING NORTH INTO WINDS

Feb. 6, 2005, Gary Leeper, East Cape fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

I finally got to try fishing for squid--so far, no joy. There is still a lot of bait in the East Cape area, so the fishing for small dorado (mahi-mahi) continues hot with bait and lures. Almost everybody fishes north due to potential winds, but I got a chance to go east early in the week, and found the same mahi-mahi populations eight miles off the lighthouse.

Marlin landings continue fair, or maybe better, considering that maybe only two to three East Cape hotel cruisers are fishing per day.

There are still no tuna schools.

Lots of humpbacks are around now, and I almost rammed one when he surfaced ten feet ahead of the boat.

Wind surfers are reporting seeing hammerhead sharks close to shore, and one gal from here at Verdugo's hit one and was thrown from her board.

East Cape weather is mixed, with one good rain storm Friday and Saturday. Air temperatures are in the 50's to 70's, and water temperatures are 69-71 degrees.
