BIG SIERRA NUMBERS CAUGHT INSHORE DURING
FISHING AT EAST CAPE'S HOTEL PUNTA COLORADA

Jan. 31-Feb. 24, 2005, Peter Langstraat, East Cape inshore fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

From the beach, the fishing at East Cape was similar and about as good as last November, mainly for Ladyfish (74), some Jacks (16), and a few Sierra (7), plus the odd Lookdown, small Roosterfish (2) or Croaker.

Fishing right in front of the Hotel Punta Colorada with the aluminum boat it was a different story. My girlfriend Mieke and I caught 91 Sierra in 9 boat outings. The best fishing days: 21 Sierra plus 4 Ladyfish; 18 Sierra; 16 Sierra and a big Triggerfish; 16 Sierra. The biggest Sierra were around 34 inches.

And now the biggest sensation: On 2/22 I caught a 49.5 inch (some 25 pounds) Dorado from the beach with 8 pound line in front of the lighthouse with a Krockodile spoon. I landed her just within a half an hour. It took some 250 yards with the first run and jumped 8 times while taking it.

It all ended up in an average of 7.3 fish per morning.

On a darker note, the gill netters were there every day of my stay and not a single "authority" showed up. I encountered them on the very first day of my stay, which undoubtedly means they have been present for a considerably longer period.
