MARLIN FISHING IS HOT JUST 12 MILES OFF
THE BAJA SHORE AT PUNTA PESCADERO

April 22, 2005, Gary Leeper, at Martin Verdugo's Beach Resort, Baja California, East Cape, Mexico:

The marlin fishing continued hot through last weekend in a band about 12 miles offshore, between white sand beach and Punta Pescadero, but has slacked off as the winds picked up on Tuesday.

East Cape dorado have been scarce and of various sizes, and only a few tuna have been brought in by adventurous cruisers going out 40-50 miles. A few wahoo have started showing up in the catch also, as well as some very unseasonable sails.

The good news is the weather is great other than for the wind, with air temperatures in the high sixties to low nineties, and the water is warming and averaging 74.5 degrees. I saw my first sardine ball since last fall. Things should pick up as soon as the winds calm down, which looks like Monday or Tuesday at this point.

Daily winners in the Western Outdoor News (W.O.N.) East Cape Fiesta de Pesca included: John Huffaker with an 18.5-pound yellowfin tuna, fishing off the Verdugo cruiser Ricky with Capt. Martin; Fredrick Hamrick, at Hotel Palmas de Cortez, fishing on the Fresh Catch, with a 30-pound dorado.
