STIFF WINDS BLOWING HARD ON THE FISHING GROUNDS AT EAST CAPE

April 30, 2005, Chuck Meredith, Los Barriles, East Cape, Baja Sur fishing, Mexico:

The hard blowing 20 mph+ wind returned yesterday 4/29, with a vengeance! Today, is equal. Sand on the beach is blowing! I'm tired of the East Cape wind this year. I went out fishing on Thursday the 28th Apr. and the blue warm current with the fish in it was 45 miles East of the lighthouse. Friends, that's 65 miles due east of my anchorage here in the wonderful wide open Bahia de Palmas, Los Barriles. That equals 3 hours' boat ride out and basically the same 3 hours coming back. That is 6 hours of a high speed boat ride for 3 hours of fishing in a day. And that is in CALM water. If you get out that far, and the wind comes up, you are screwed in any size boat available here. Yesterday, a lot of boats found that out as the wind socked them out there. The fish were found at the 50 mile range though. Maybe next week, the fish will be at the 40 mile run from here. Unless you own a gas station, the fuel cost can become overwhelming for the private boater. Anyway, the fish schools are out there. Marlin, sailfish, dorado, tuna, and some wahoo. It's just almost impossible to go that far in 1 day for them, though.
