VERY GOOD YELLOWFIN TUNA ACTION FOR EAST CAPE FISHING BOATS

June 23-29, 2006, Chris Moyers, East Cape Smoke House, East Cape, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

East Cape fishing has been pretty nice and real consistent over the past couple of weeks. This week once again saw an average billfish count, a nice Dorado count, and an outstanding yellowfin tuna count.

For the most part, it's the southern fishing locales that are yielding the best numbers. The East Cape sportfishing area saw air temperatures between 72-100 degrees and a water temperature range of 78-90 degrees. There was very little wind save for afternoon breezes. Bait-wise, East Cape has sardines and ballyhoo.

The Yellowfin Tuna bite continues to pretty much go off. There are plenty caught in the 40-50 pound class. Most Ahi action occurred to the south with anglers off Rancho Leonero, Cabo Pulmo, and Los Frailes. Sardines, cedar plugs, hoochies and feathers were the choice for the pelagic tuna.

East Cape billfish anglers generated an overall catch rate of about 15 percent so we were down a bit there. Ballyhoo and various lures did the trick for all billfish species this week. Striped Marlin led the way with anglers reporting most action to the south off La Ribera, Punta Colorada, and Cabo Pulmo. Quite a bit of Striper action was also reported straight off Los Barriles, and limited action to the north off Punta Pescadero.

Sailfish anglers reported very limited action to the north off Punta Pescadero in the vicinity of the shark buoy stops and Los Relices, as well as to the south off Cabo Pulmo.

The East Cape fishing area also saw several Blue Marlin landed to the north off Punta Pescadero, straight off Los Barriles, and to the south off Los Frailes.

Dorado fishing was fair as anglers generated an overall catch rate of about 25 percent which was down slightly.

East Cape had decent Wahoo week with angler reporting just over a dozen landings mostly to the south. Rapalas did the trick there.

There were also Pargo landed inshore at Rancho Leonero and Punta Colorada on sardinas, Triggerfish inshore at Punta Colorada on sardinas, Cabrilla landed inshore at Punta Colorada on sardinas, Roosterfish landed inshore at Punta Arena on sardinas, Mako Shark on ballyhoo, Pompano inshore at Punta Colorada, and 1 Amberjack on sardinas.
