MEXICO FISHING TRIP TO THE ENSENADA 500 SPOT

Jan. 6-7, 2006, Steve Ross, Bad Dog, Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico Sportfishing Report:

Bad Dog departed Ensenada's Marina Coral on Friday afternoon, January 6th, 2006, at 2:30 p.m. to fish with Marinero Alex Ruiz, owner Steve Ross, and guest Juan Lu Cardona-Sepulveda.

We arrived outside the lower 500 where the water temperature rose from a low of 57 to a high of 61.8 degrees to confirm the Terrafin SST charts.

We saw jumping tuna and stopped to fish for broadbill swordfish in that area just outside the lower finger bank. I saw a few longliners off in the distance.

We set up two large squids off the outriggers on Penn International 80 2-speeds and soon giant Humboldt squid attacked them. At one point hundreds of them attacked our boat in a frenzy and left, letting us catch only one. We caught 7 squid to 39 pounds.

We caught many blue sharks to 60 pounds as they munched on our purchased baits from the Vien Doung market, in the Linda Vista area of San Diego.

At 0400 Saturday morning, a large swordfish flew by the boat showing us what we were looking for in the dark. At sunrise we began trolling for nada and gave up and went to the Banda Bank for a dozen rockcod, returning to our Ensenada slip at 2:00 p.m.
