FISHING THE COASTAL AREAS

Feb. 12, 2005, Erich Licht, Huatulco, Oaxaca, Mexico Fishing Report:

I have fished from Puerto Escondido to Huatulco and parts between on several trips and have found spectacular sportfishing for Sailfish, Dorado & Yellowfin. I was in Huatulco recently after New Year's and the place was quite empty of tourists. Offshore fishing was off due to a green current but would you believe 15-pound Sierra Mackerel along the shore?

The coastline of Oaxaca is simply spectacular visually and the winter weather absolutely ideal, with none of the wind that plagues Baja in the winter months.

In two weeks on the coast this last trip and I never saw the Pacific even agitated! Fishing prices are comparable to East Cape, but pangas are a little outdated. They just need more exposure ideally and more competition from airlines to get the price down to visit. Once you get there you can find clean hotel rooms in Crucecita, the main town in Huatulco, with cable TV for as low as 200 pesos a night! Believe it, I stayed in one.
