IXTAPA ZIHUATANEJO PROTESTS AGAINST CRUISE SHIP PIER PROPOSAL

Sept. 12, 2004, Ed Kunze, Zihuatanejo Protest March Report:

There is not much to tell about the peaceful march, other than about 1,200 to 1,500 people participated. That is a pretty good turnout, but most of them were protesting the proposed new pier for cruise ships. It is a worthy protest in its own right.

This weekend, the Zihuatanejo fishermen and the shop owners all got together and asked for donations. I gave $100 for the purpose of buying paint and cleaning supplies for the Municipal Pier cleanup. The Zihuatanejo pier has been the historical point for the tender boats for the cruise ships to load and unload passengers, but they want something that is more protected from the minimum swells that sometimes are in the bay.

Of course to block off the swells, you also block all water circulation, and stagnate the bay.

As far as catch and release, and the panga long line situation, I believe a serious statement was made by virtue of the captains and deckhands participating in the march. Five years ago, it would not have happened!
