ROOSTERFISH TAGGING PROGRAM NEEDED
Oct. 3, 2005, Paul Phillips, Fintastic Total Tag & Release Tournament, Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, Mexico Roosterfish Tagging Proposal:
We have both been thinking about a roosterfish tagging program at Ixtapa Zihuatanejo for a while.
What got my attention was some captain got a bit of the wrong idea, and was tagging everything about 3 years ago. Well, he put a tag in a roosterfish, and low and behold, it was recaptured last year, pretty much in the same area but weighing 54 pounds.
So last week I wrote Ed Kunze, and said here is a new project for you. We batted around a couple ideas and agreed he should do it. I'm going to call The Billfish Foundation and see if I can get a handle on tags.
This project will benefit the fishery. We don't know squat all about these roosterfish. There are so many questions. Do they migrate, stay a lifetime in the same area, or do they return to certain areas year after year or to breed?
I think it would be beneficial. Let's do a Roosterfish tagging program.
