MAHI MAHI ACTION CENTERED IN SAN LORENZO CHANNEL

Oct. 23, 2004, Artie Davis, Black Magic Sportfishing, La Paz, Mexico Fishing:

We had clients here for that past two weeks and had really good local dorado fishing at Espiritu Santo Island. The bite for us and everybody else was in the Lorenzo Channel; however, after a week of every boat from La Paz fishing there, it began to slow down.

We were fortunate enough to find a fresh batch of fish on the front side of the island between Isla Ballena and Los Islotes, in tight to the Island. The grade of dorado was nice, all fish between 12 and 40 pounds.

We ran an overnight trip from La Paz up to Las Animas and Santa Cruz Islands and found some wahoo, sailfish and dorado. I have been hearing rumors of commercial pangas catching GIANT tuna at punta norte of Santa Cruz so we investigated and found the rumors to be true as we saw a panga next to us land 3 yellowfin tuna in a matter of an hour. All fish looked to be over one-hundred pounders. We hooked 2 and after long battles both managed to get loose. Going back up there a bit more prepared this week. Water temps were in the low 80's and wind was calm.
