DORADO SPORTFISHING SEASON WINDING DOWN

Nov. 13, 2004, Don Bear, Loreto, Mexico Fishing Trip Reports:

Fabrizio Marangoni of Thousand Oaks & Nopolo and I fished out of Loreto with Paulino Martinez on Monday (11/8) and Friday (11/12) with the following 2-day results: 8 cabrilla to 12 lbs, 1 dorado and 19 cochis.

Both days we fished around Pta. Perico (Is. Carmen) to escape the rough water caused by strong northwest winds. Loreto water temps both days were right around 78 degrees. However, on Friday, when we were trolling for about an hour for dorado (without a single strike), we hit some water that was 80.2 degrees (a perfect spot for dorado, we incorrectly thought). Except for 1 cabrilla and the dorado, all of the fish were caught on iron at the bottom. Mackerel were available for purchase both days, and the sardines in the Loreto marina were abundant and easily netted by Paulino.

Tuesday thru Thursday were too rough to fish.

Today, Saturday, is beautiful, however.

Earlier, Charlie Licha and Michael Hartmann of Loreto fished with Alvaro Murillo on Sunday (11/7), catching 2 cabrilla and 2 dorado - all on mackerel.

For all intents and purposes, the dorado are gone for the year -- or so it seems.
