YELLOWTAIL CAUGHT AT LA CHOLLA ON ISLA CARMEN

Feb. 6, 2005, Pam Bolles, Baja Big Fish Company, Loreto, Mexico Fishing Report:

Loreto isn't as windy as last Sunday, but it's cold! We had decent rains on Friday night, then it cleared yesterday, but it got cold due to a cold front. Today is mostly cloudy with winds from the west, but with cold air too.

Capt. Francisco went fishing out of Loreto on Wednesday and Friday. Both days his clients passed on making the long trip to Punta Pulpito, where boats are catching 20-pound class yellowtail.

Instead, Francisco took them fishing at La Cholla on Isla Carmen, and they got three 30-pound class yellowtail. They got the yellowtail on live mackerel at about 6 to 20 feet below the surface. At La Cholla they're breezing right now, feeding at the surface because the water temperatures are fairly warm. Inside the bellies of the yellowtail were 8-12 inch squid. Surface jigs are working to get the Yellowtail.

We have no word on Loreto inshore fishing, as we just haven't been doing it lately. Commercial netting is going on inside Puerto Escondido, so fishing there has been pretty much wiped out. For the most part, Loreto seas have been rough. Friday was the calmest day.
