CALM SEAS AND SO-SO YELLOWTAIL FISHING

May 15, 2005, Arturo Susarrey, Arturo's Sportfishing, Loreto, Mexico Fishing Report:

Loreto fishing weather has been very calm during the week, with warm temperatures showing up at this time of year as usual.

Yellowtail fishing is still kind of slow and most of the fishing has been done at El Pulpito and also at Puerto Almeja. We are catching yellowtail with a very good size, 24 to 32 pounds, and about 2 to 3 yellowtail per boat.

Fisherman are anxious to catch dorado in the Loreto sportfishing area but they still far away. We hear good news about dorado catches around the reef El Bajo de Afuera, more or less 40 miles north of Coronado Island. Hope the warmer waters bring them soon.

A lot of sea bass and red snapper were caught during the week at Punta Perico in same spots as yellowtail. Most of the fishing at Loreto was based on sea bass and red snapper, with an average weight of 8 to 15 pounds.

Mackerel and bigeye bait is available at Coronado Island or from the marina, at a price of 10 pieces for $15 and 20 pieces for $25, or plenty of sardina for $10.
