BARRACUDA THICK FOR FLY FISHING ANGLERS

Jan. 15, 2005, Gary Graham, Baja On The Fly, Magdalena Bay, Mexico Fly Fishing Report:

In fly fishing at Magdalena Bay, the Puerto San Carlos entrada produced a few yellowtail as well as leopard grouper if you can get the fly below all of the barracuda on the surface. Fishing in the Magdalena Bay mangrove esteros, the corvina shut off, leaving only the cabrilla for the few anglers fishing this week. The Magdalena Bay whale count continued to climb with more than 15 gray whales spotted near the entrada.

At Puerto Lopez Mateos, last week local fishermen caught an 80-pound grouper. Outside the channel, fishing was slow due to weather. There were three or four whales spotted, including one mom and her calf in the bay. Puerto Lopez Mateos will be having its Whale Festival soon.

The Magdalena Bay sea water temperature was 69-75 degrees, and the air temperature was 66-73 degrees. Weather conditions were clear.
