FISHING BOATS CATCH A FEW DORADO AND TUNA MIXED WITH BILLFISH

Jan. 14, 2005, Larry Edwards, Cortez Yacht Charters, Mazatlan, Mexico Fishing Report:

In Mazatlan fishing, striped marlin and sailfish are still available at the rate of about 1 billfish per boat day fished, along with a scattering of dorado (also mahi-mahi or dolphinfish) and yellowfin tuna. Overall Mazatlan sportfishing catches for 20 fishing days reflected 16 stripers, (5 released) and 4 sailfish released, 7 dorado, 12 yellowfin tuna and 1 mako shark. The inshore fishing action continues to be very good at Mazatlan and is producing many jack crevalle and easy limit fishing for red snapper and mojarras.

Mazatlan Climate was mostly sunny and warm, temperatures ranged from 52 nights to 90 daytime highs. Mazatlan sea conditions were much better this week, but ocean water temperatures have dropped off a bit, ranging from 73-75 degrees.

Mackerel colored clones worked well for fishing, but rigged trolling baits were best for the billfish. The best Mazatlan fishing area continues to be at the 23-28 mile range to the southwest of the marina.
