DORADO FISHING GOES TOTALLY WIDE-OPEN FOR LOCAL BOATS

Aug. 12, 2005, Larry Edwards, Cortez Yacht Charters, Mazatlan, Mexico Fishing Report:

The Mazatlan vacation fishing area had an absolutely wide-open dorado bite for the entire week with easy limit fishing and literally more than 100 dorado (mahi-mahi) releases.

The fish have massed at the shark buoys and the volume grows by the day. Only 1 single, smaller blue marlin was taken for this week, but the billfish effort was diminished by the easy dorado catching.

Overall catches for 35 Mazatlan fishing days reflected 1 blue marlin, 10 sailfish, (4 released) and 293 dorado for the offshore waters.

Inshore fishing from the super pangas was also very good, producing good catches on Palometas, Red Snapper and Yellowtail and of course, for those that ventured to the buoys, limits of dorado.

Mazatlan climate had 76 nights to 90 daytime highs, cloudy and humid. Sea conditions were calm, with water temps at 85-86. Best fishing area was 10-15 miles to the buoys and the dorado fishing, and 15 to 20 miles for the billfish. Rigged baits were best for the billfish, ballyhoo for the dorado, and shrimp for the inshore catches.
