OFFSHORE CHARTER FISHING BOATS AVERAGE ABOUT 2 MARLIN PER DAY

Jan. 13, 2006, Larry Edwards, Cortez Yacht Charters, Mazatlan, Mexico:

Striped marlin action highlighted Mazatlan fishing offshore with an average catch of a couple billfish per boat day fished.

The Mazatlan charter fishing boats "Aries VII" and "Aries VII" both had 7 striped marlin release days, leading the boats.

Inshore, the fishing continues to be a smorgasbord of bottom fish that included baquetas, pargo, mojarras, cochitos, cabrilla, snapper, grouper and yellowtail, with easy limit catches.

The sportfishing fleet, reporting for 34 fishing days, reflected 70 stripers, 1 dorado and 1 mako shark.

Mazatlan weather was mostly cloudy with temperatures from 50 degree nights to 82 daytime highs, calm to gentle breezes, and water temperatures stable at 74.5 degrees. The best fishing area was out to the southwest of the Marina El Cid, 23-27 miles. Good catches were made on the mackerel colored clones and petroleros, but the rigged baits have been producing very well too.
