PUERTO PENASCO KAYAK FISHING TRIP AT MORUA

May 31, 2006, Wayne Sheffield, Kayak Fishing at Rocky Point, Mexico:

I stayed in a house on Playa Encanto, at 10 miles south of Puerto Penasco and the beach front south of the Morua estuary was where I was fishing last Monday. The winds at Rocky Point were light and conditions perfect. I caught lots of pompano on medium chrome Kastmasters tipped with little pieces of pompano, several seatrout, though none over a pound, on rubber shrimp tipped with bait, and some fair bottom fish.

While fishing one mile out with a kayak, I had an interesting experience. I had 1 pompano on a stringer, with my back to the sea, and heard a snort and thought it was a porpoise. I saw a sea lion homing in on my pompano. I pulled the stringer into the boat, and the sea lion came within 1 foot of my kayak, underneath, and just looked up at me. The next morning, the sea was so calm I could see the reef structure well and look forward to returning with my own kayak and more fishing time.
