MACKEREL BAITS WORKING WELL AT GONZAGA BAY

June 14, 2004, Erik McElvany, Gonzaga Bay, Baja California, Mexico Fishing:

We fished off of the shipwreck using mackeral and spotted bay bass. The big grouper were caught on the spotted bay bass and a leopard grouper bit every mackerel we handed them. We got broke off a lot though. I have fished in Gonzaga a lot over the last fifteen years and I have never seen the grouper stacked up on that spot like that.

We metered fish on the high spot from forty foot all the way to the bottom at fifty six feet. We take a 22 foot Hydrasports center console down every time we go and put it in the water at Puertocitos.

My family and I have been down there when the road was at its worst so we think it is great now. The worst part is all the potholes you have to deal with from Santa Maria south to Puertocitos especially when you have a boat on a trailer behind you.
