HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ARRIVE FOR BATTLE OF BANDS

April 24, 2005, Catalina Meders, Title Company Bookstore, San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico Report:

Hola from breezy San Felipe. I got up to the bookstore balcony this morning to find great disarray and all kinds of things blown about. The wind must have been pretty strong at San Felipe during the night, although it wasn't out in the 'burbs where my house is.

The wind started at San Felipe yesterday around 3 p.m., and slowly escalated until most of the vendors were forced to disassemble their displays and pack it in for the evening. Too many umbrellas were trying to leave their moorings and sail off down the street.

Right now the temperature at San Felipe is 74 degrees, but it feels colder than that because of the breeze. The humidity is fairly high, 44 percent, but again, it doesn't feel like it. Looking at the satellite map it looks like there is a large thin cloud cover over much of Southern California and Baja, so it's liable to be windy all day.

San Felipe bay has lots of white caps, but there are a few hardy souls out there wading. Last Wednesday we were visited by dozens of high school students from all over Baja Norte. They came here to perform in a sort of "Battle Of The Bands." Many of them were really good, and the dancers were very colorful and energetic. One young man sounded quite a lot like Ricky Martin, and the all-girl, all-guitar group was spectacular. We on the bookstore balcony had the perfect view of course. Until next time, vaya con Dios from the San Felipe bookstore by the bay.
