San Felipe Report, Mexico

THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY RUSH IS OVER

Dec. 4, 2005, Catalina Meders, Title Company Bookstore, San Felipe, Mexico Town Report:

Hola everyone from San Felipe, where it is very windy and the window of the bookstore is rattling. The temperature on the balcony at this moment says 64 degrees, but it doesn't feel like that. The sky is blue with a haze from all the sand blowing about and the water at San Felipe is choppy with large white caps. Actually, it feels like a very brisk early spring day on the coast of England.

The Thanksgiving rush is over and the town of San Felipe has been very very quiet for the last few days. There are not many vendors around and not many people at the swap meet yesterday.

On a day like today you get the illusion, rare lately, that San Felipe is still a sleepy little fishing village, but not so. Up at El Dorado, there is a huge billboard showing a diagram of the coming "Shopping Center" which is supposedly going to have a "Home Depot" and one of the large Mexican supermarkets as anchor stores. Many of us have very mixed feelings about all this. But change cannot be halted. We will have to either leave or go with the flow. Until next week, vaya con Dios from the San Felipe bookstore by the bay.
