BAJA SUR GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES FUND FOR FISHERIES ENFORCEMENT

Oct. 29, 2004, Bob Grimes, San Jose del Cabo, Baja California Sur, Mexico Fishing Regulation Enforcement Report:

Mexican sportfishing pangueros have been imploring Baja California Sur state governor Leonel Cota Montano to do something to stop the widespread poaching that has decimated the fish in the Los Cabos area. Governor Cota gave an interview to La Tribuna de Los Cabos in which he said that a trust will be established with fees from sportfishing licenses, to provide money for vigilance against poaching. Meanwhile, the PESCA inspector coming to La Playita in San Jose Del Cabo has been pretty rude to Mexican pangueros and gringo tourists. He was accompanied by armed marines. He appears to be ignorant on the regulations, and thinks that you can catch 5 dorado, while the limit is two. He is checking for sportfishing licenses, and since they can't be purchased in San Jose del Cabo, you better bring one with you. When the Mexican pangueros point out to the inspector that a big rusty shrimper from the mainland is dragging the bottom illegally as close to 500 yards from shore in the Punta Gorda area, he says that is not his department, his job is to check for sportfishing licenses.
