OFFSHORE GAME FISH WITHIN 2 KILOMETERS OF LOS CABOS COAST

Dec. 25, 2004, Bob Grimes, San Jose del Cabo sportfishing, Baja, Mexico Fishing and Conditions Report:

Here in San Jose del Cabo, fishing for pelagic species such as wahoo, dorado, and tuna has been good on some days and slow on others. The good news is the big numbers of fish found less than 1 or 2 kilometers of the coast at the Iman and 25 banks, and close to Punta Gorda.

If you go to the Inner Gordo Bank to catch chihuill, wahoo and some tuna of good size are hitting the chihuil, as long as the big needlefish don't kill them first. A few wahoo are hitting lures such as Marauders and Rapalas, although fishing with lures is a little slow. My son David caught a good wahoo of 50 pounds, one kilometer off Punta Gorda with a silver and purple jig.

Some days, we've had a lot of small tuna, around Punta Gorda, mostly of 8 to 15 pounds, with the best bait being live sardina. The bait pangueros are going to the area of Bahia Santa Maria for bait, and it is best to leave the beach at sunrise and fish with lures at first at Punta Gorda, because the baitsellers come there with the sardina about 8 a.m.

In La Tribuna de los Cabos, an article described a plan to combat corruption and illegal fishing, which I personally doubt will succeed, but at least local politicians are talking about this problem, mainly of corrupt officials issuing illegal commercial fishing licenses.
