PANGA OUTING PRODUCES A 100.5-POUND AMBERJACK

Oct. 16, 2005, Jack Simpson, La Playita, San Jose del Cabo, Mexico Fishing Trip Report:

I fished 2 days including Oct. 11th at San Jose del Cabo with Eric Brictson's Gordo Banks Pangas on Captain Tony's super panga.

The first day was on and off rainy all day with no bait and a water temperature of 87 degrees. We caught 2 small yellowfin tuna on a cedar plug and purple Yozuri. We flylined some borrowed squid and caught a small 1 pound cocinero that we promptly put a 9/0 hook on and sent it to the bottom. Within minutes a big amberjack grabbed the bait. I brought him up and we weighed it on Eric's electric digital scale. It's weight was 100.5 pounds. That fish made a bad day good.

The second fishing day was rough and windy with no bait again and a water temperature of 87 degrees. We were able to catch 2 tuna to 25 pounds and 2 dorado on flylined squid.

A first for me was seeing Captain Tony catch a green sea turtle on squid. We removed the hook, took some pictures and promptly released him.

All in all it was a good fishing trip to San Jose del Cabo, because of the big amberjack and turtle, but the weather was bad!
