RUFFLED SEAS BUT GOOD BOTTOM FISH ACTION

Nov. 14, 2004, Capt. Kelly Catian, K&M Offshore Sportfishing, San Quintin, Baja fishing, Mexico:

I had Ron and Mark Mayeda of San Clemente, Calif., and their friend Chris Hedrickson of Mission Viejo, Calif., on Friday & Saturday fishing out of San Quintin on the Offshore I.

Friday was very rough getting around the point and after a few miles we turned and headed for Socorro for lots of bonita, barracuda, sandbass, etc. We ended up fishing way down south of San Quintin and got our butts kicked coming back uphill on the way home.

I was ready to call it off for Saturday. There was no way that much chop was going to disappear overnight and the wind was not slowing down at all. We met at the San Quintin dock on Saturday morning and it looked okay so we headed out. We got to the 240 spot under cloudy but still skies. The water was almost glassy. We slow-trolled some macks and got picked up by lots of bonita. We jigged up one good-sized San Quintin yellowtail and decided to try for some bottom fish, as the weather was so nice. We made drift after drift in the same area and got into some great rockcod and lingcod using jigs and live bait.

Average depth was 260 feet. The San Quintin water temperature was 63 degrees, and clean. The wind was NOT. There was a strong current running, due to the big tide swing.
