COWCOD AND GREAT BOTTOM FISHING ACTION

Nov. 14, 2004, Capt. Kelly Catian, K&M Offshore Sportfishing, San Quintin, Baja California, Mexico:

Lots of great bottom fish and a big cowcod caught fishing at San Quintin, and still yellowtail on high-spots. San Quintin fishing water is real clean and blue. It rained on Sunday night, clear now. The big cowcod was caught in about 280 feet at a San Quintin rock pile called "Los Volcanes." Not many people have fished it, as it is more of a commercial spot due to depth.

The average depth is 380-plus feet, but there is a pinnacle that rises to 280 feet. The spot is between Ben's rock and the 15 Fathom. We drifted the area with live sardines on a double dropper loop and about 16 ounces of weight. In this area you just don't know what's going to be next. We had big vermilion's, lings, cowcod, whitefish, and some big canary rockfish. The big irons were also working well on the reds.
