San Quintin, Mexico:
Tough Weather, Stranded Sailboat Off San Quintin

Dec. 30, 2004, Randy Peters, San Quintin, Baja California, Mexico:

edco

I headed down to San Quintin with my son and 4 friends in an effort to fish with Kelly Catian and his son Oscar of K&M Sportfishing on Tuesday 12/28 and Wednesday 12/29. The weather reports were very ominous for Ensenada. I was unable to get a report for San Quintin so we rolled the dice and made the trip hoping that the massive front would not reach San Quintin. I was wrong.

We managed to make bait in San Quintin bay and headed out past the point to try to get in on the recent hot yellowtail bite.

We got about 2 miles out and were forced to turn back due to heavy seas and accelerating winds. We tried fishing in San Quintin bay for Halibut but yielded none.

Then, we received a radio call from a catamaran that had its anchors stuck and an inoperable motor. They were just south of the point so Oscar Catian and 3 of us headed out to help them. It was a young couple from Texas who were very scared. They could not budge their anchors as they had two of them at a 90 degree angle to each other and the wind was pushing the boat very hard.

They managed to get into their dinghy and throw us a rope. We took them back to Don Eddie's where they stayed the night. We left San Quintin on Tuesday as the Wednesday weather outlook was bleak. This is the second time in the last 3 trips to San Quintin that I have been unable to fish due to rough seas. I told Kelly to hang up on me next time that I called as I am bad luck.

STRANDED BOAT--Randy Peters photographed this boat stranded about 3 miles out of San Quintin. His group, fishing with K&M Offshore Sportfishing's Capt. Oscar Catian, took a couple from Texas off the anchored boat and back to Don Eddie's Landing. Photo courtesy Randy Peters.
