San Quintin, Mexico:
Anglers Catch Barracuda, Bass, Yellowtail, And Rockfish, But No White Seabass

Jan. 14, 2005, Capt. Kelly Catian, K&M Offshore Fishing, San Quintin, Baja California, Mexico:

The rain at San Quintin stopped on Monday and just in time as I had a buddy of mine coming down to fish a couple days.

Rick "El Jamon" Chase of "High-Count" lures was fishing with me back in the late-80s and is well known by the older skippers and locals. Rick brought his friend, K.C. Little, with him to San Quintin, a well-known name to anyone running boats down to Cabo.

We decided to go fishing south of San Quintin on Tuesday as there were "rumors" of someone having caught white seabass earlier in the week. We got into some barracuda, bonita and lots of bass and rockfish, but no white seabass. It's always a risk going south because if it doesn't happen" you're a long way to the high spots to the north of San Quintin bay.

On Wednesday, we got headed fishing out from San Quintin at 5:30 to make bait under a beautifully colored sky that you only see down here. Bait was pretty quick with lots of nice 3 to 4-inch greenback mackerel. I headed straight to the backside of the San Quintin 15 fathom fishing spot, where I'd gotten fish last week.

The San Quintin ocean water temperature was 60-62 degrees, and clean. There was a slight west swell of 1 to 2 feet, and the wind was offshore and barely a breeze. It was a nice and warm at midday.

We started our first drift with Rick and K.C. on the iron and myself on bait. Rick got stopped within 5 minutes and landed a nice 18-20 pound San Quintin yellowtail. There were also lots of big bonito that were taking the jigs as well. Rick was on again, only this time it was pulling more like a summer 240 spot yellowtail. The yellowtail came to gaff and was weighed at 25-26 pounds!

K.C. was up next with a nice 24-25 pound slug yellowtail. The guys decided they only needed about 5 or 6 yellowtail, and they wanted to go and get a few lingcod, so we left the still feeding yellowtails, to pull on some lings? Don't ask me. Anyway we ended up with a great catch and the girls made fish tacos for everyone.
