San Quintin, Mexico:
Yellowtail And White Seabass Elusive For Local Fishing Boat Santa Monica

Jan. 17, 2005, Julio Meza, Santa Monica, San Quintin fishing, Baja California, Mexico:

I was back on the water, fishing out of San Quintin, on Sunday, Jan. 16 on board the Santa Monica with Conrrado Gonzalez, Enrique Melero and Fernando Arjona. We had in mind to fish the early yellowtail bite at the local San Quintin offshore fishing spots.

With a beautiful clear sky and flat water, we put the boat in the water by 5:30 a.m. and head directly out of San Quintin bay to the west side of the 15 spot, but the yellowtail were not there. We fished also at the little 15 spot, and after that we fished the 6 spot, but for slow fishing action, just 2 out of 3 yellowtail strikes on iron jigs. On our way back to San Quintin, again fishing at the 15 spot, we landed 1 out of 2 yellowtail strikes, but the reef guards (seals) were very smart, taking one of our yellowtail. We decided at 11 a.m. to go fishing for white seabass south of San Quintin at El Pabellon, and we found a hot bite on sandbass and bottom fish plus a nice white seabass. It was a slow but nice San Quintin fishing trip. The sea water temperature was 58 to 59 degrees, and sea conditions were perfect, sunny, warm to 18 degrees Centigrade and flat. We used just artificial lures.
