San Quintin, Mexico:
Slow Fishing In Cool Water At 56 To 57 Degrees

April 9, 2005, Kelly Catian, K&M Offshore Sportfishing, San Quintin, Baja sportfishing, Mexico:

We've been very busy on the new fishing boat and the fishing weather at San Quintin has been pretty unpredictable lately as well.

I went fishing out of San Quintin on April 5th with Chris Fuller, and we actually got really great weather for the day, but the fishing was sort of slow due to the 56-57 degree water around Isla San Martin.

The guys weren't real interested in bottom fishing and wanted to fish whatever we could find up top or around the kelp at the island. We fished some lingcods and other rockfish in the morning at the 15 spot, and then checked out the fishing at Ben's Rock to see if we could scratch up a yellowtail or something, but got no meter marks of fish or bait so we ended up at San Martin Island and got some calico bass and barracuda at the jetty in front of Hassler's Cove.

It was here that one of the guys got pulled on pretty good while soaking a live mackerel on the 50-foot bottom. The fish, probably a yellowtail, inhaled the big mackerel and was making a beeline for deeper water when...FARM! Fish gone! And the angler looking at me with a puzzled "wasn't me" look. Anyhow, we fished that spot for a while and had fun with some more bass, then headed for the barn. There was lots of bird and bait action at the point in the afternoon.
