San Quintin, Mexico:
K&M Boat Catches Barracuda And Yellowtail At Isla San Martin

June 7, 2005, Kelly Catian, K&M Offshore Sportfishing, San Quintin, Baja California, Mexico sportfishing:

Over the weekend we did a crew trip with the usual suspects: myself, Monte, and the "Bomberos" Chris Pierce, Dave "Browner" Brown, Austin "El Bombero original," and my sister Jaye.

The weather was overcast but warm and no wind and there was about a 3-4 foot swell out of the west.

We took our time, not leaving the dock until 8 a.m., and after we plugged the bait tank with fresh mackerel we headed around Cabo San Quintin into the swell towards San Martin Island. Everyone was nice and warm inside the cab!

Upon arrival at Isla San Martin, we were welcomed with yellowtail and barracuda all over the place. After the usual flurry of jig-casting, bird-nesting, and baits that wouldn't swim away from the boat, we started the slow troll, and of course it was on!

We also got into a good halibut bite on the north end where every drift we'd get picked up, but we only landed one due to angler brain-fade.

A heavy mist, almost rain, came in about 1 p.m., so we shacked up in the pilothouse while running out to Ben's Rock for some rockfish. The new boat, Offshore, ran like a champ, cruising through the building swell and chop high and dry, and no bouncing around.

Our catch for the day was six yellowtail, one halibut, and some rockfish. The water temperature was 59 degrees.
