TWO BLACK SEA BASS LANDED DURING BAJA
FISHING AT LA BOCANA WITH CAPT. PACO ZUÑIGA
Sept. 13, 2005, Julio Meza, La Bocana, Baja fishing trip report, Mexico:
This Monday, I and my girlfriend Alma went fishing at La Bocana, Baja California Sur, Mexico, after getting a good weather and fishing report from Capt. Juanchy.
We fished on board Paco Zuñiga's panga. Early in the morning, we tried to harvest some bonitas for bait, but the yellowtail school was too tight and we had a hard time making bait.
We traded yellowtails for bonitas with the commercial pangueros. Then, fishing 6 miles out of La Bocana, on a heading 210 degrees, we stopped over a bank 120 to 150 feet deep.
We fished with 2 pound bonita chunks on number 12 hooks, using 50 pound line on Shimano TN40 and Tiagra 20 reels.
We wait until these 2 monster fish showed up. After 25 and 30 minute heavy fights, we landed 2 black sea bass.
We had a great time at La Bocana, with the best fishing, excellent food and the best captains, Juanchy and Paco.
We fished for bait around Islas Ballena, but the 2 black seabass or meros were landed on the Gringa Bank, in clear blue water.
We drove to La Bocana from San Quintin on Saturday afternoon south and north on Sunday. There are still 30 off road miles to Abreojos but the long trip is nothing compared to the incredible fishing in that area. It is so good that getting bait is hard because of the yellowtails.
