BAJA COASTAL YELLOWTAIL FISHING AT
THE PITAHAYA BANK OFF LA BOCANA

Dec. 10, 2005, Juanchys Aguilar, La Bocana, Baja California Sur, Mexico Fishing:

This Baja fishing week at La Bocana had excellent weather and also good Baja fishing for yellowtail and large grouper. Right now, the yellowtail are about 20 to 35 pounds, and we are now waiting for the yellow of 40 to 45 pounds which come at this time of year. They have not arrived yet, and we are hoping for them soon.

Right now, we don't have yellowtail south of La Bocana at Whale Rock, or Roca Ballena. Instead, the yellowtail are located at the Pitahaya Bank, 8 miles northwest of La Bocana.

On Friday, Dec. 10, I caught a black sea bass of 134 pounds with a Penn 4/0 reel, 40 pound line, and 6 feet of 100-pound leader. My friend Feliciano Villa also caught one of 95 pounds while fishing with a handline on his boat Luna.

These large bass were hooked at the Pitahaya Bank at 122 feet deep, with a water temperature of 67 degrees, no wind, just some heat.

Next week we're hoping to send some good Baja fishing reports from La Bocana with some good grouper photos. This week we did not have any sportfishing anglers at La Bocana, but we are expecting some from the San Diego area for the rest of the month.
